Andy's Allards @ Amelia

This coming March at Amelia Island will mark the end of an era. Andy Picariello, an Allard enthusiast like no other, will be selling his prized Allard J2 and K2 at RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island Auction on Saturday March 4. 

Allard K2-1704

This early K2 (7th built) was exported on July 5, 1950 R&P Motorcars in NYC. The car was originally painted blue with a blue interior. Andy acquired the car in 2003 in a disassembled state and then worked with noted Allard restorer Barry Parker of Vintage Metalcraft in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania to bring this K2 to concourse condition. Allard J2-1738

J2-1738 was Andy’s vehicular pride & joy since 1963. This J2 was exported to August 25, 1950 to Moss Motors in Los Angeles, arriving October 3rd. The order for this J2 was very unique, likely being a rush order. This right hand drive J2 was painted red with red interior and was shipped in a crate without the engine, transmission, exhaust, wheels, wiring, and gauges. This was odd because many LHD J2’s had already been built and the majority of US bound J2’s were configured for Cadillac engines, while this J2 was configured for Ford/Mercury power. Side note: some may criticize this car because it doesn’t have Smiths/Lucas gauges, however this car was shipped without gauges so Moss Motors had no choice but to install the Stewart-Warner gauges that remain on the car today.

The team at Moss worked quickly, allowing new owner Colonel Steinmetz to race the car at the inaugural Pebble Beach road races in 1950. Unfortunately the car suffered mechanical issues and had to retire, but Steinmetz was back in 1951 finishing 14th. The car then passed on to Dale Duncan, a buddy of Carroll Shelby who also raced Allards. Duncan shoe-horned in a Chrysler 331 and raced the car at least once placing 2nd at Caddo Mills.

Andy acquired the car in 1963 and proceeded to make the car his own. He converted from steel to knock-off wire wheels - ordering the parts directly from Allard! After refurbishing the car for 3 years, he vintage raced the car from 1966 to 2000. In the early 2000’s, Andy commissioned noted Allard restorer Barry Parker to repair the body that had corroded over years of use. At this time, Andy had the car painted this beautiful deep maroon and upholstered in tan leather. 

Since its restoration, the car has earned numerous accolades including Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) National First Junior and First Senior prizes, AACA historic race vehicle certification, an Amelia Award at the 2007 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and the Road & Track "Car We Would Most Like To Drive" trophy at the Vanderbilt Concours in 2007. Both of these cars will give their new owners a rare opportunity to show at any top concourse or enter the vintage rally or tour of their choice. These cars reflect Andy’s passion for the Allard marque and we hope that they find new homes that care for and enjoy these Allards as much as Andy has. 

Amelia 2015

We're pleased to report that the Allard marque was well represented at this year's Amelia Island Concours weekend. The Rosenblad's brought out both of their Allards to Saturdays "Car's & Coffee" event at the Golf Club at Amelia. This is a cool event that's open to the public and fills a big void in the weekend as people wait for the big event Sunday. The Rosenblads have two unique Allard's...the first is the DeDion/wire wheel K2; one only six or so built. Next up is their Consul engined Palm Beach - of 84 Palm Beach's built, only nine were equipped with the Consul 4-cylinder engine and only four are believed to exist today. Their car looks, in our opinion what Sydney envisioned the "Bridgehampton" would have looked like if his entry to the 1954 Le Mans approved.

Next up was Jim Taylor's recently acquired J2X 3048 that was just recently refreshed. We are big fans of the red on white color scheme which hearkens back to the good ol' days in the 50's where owner's/racer's had no problem with a garish color scheme to help set them and their car apart.

Auction Preview - K1-249

On March 8, RM will auction off K1-249 at their Amelia Auction sale. 249 was originally sold by Dagenham motors to a Mr. Sandos on June 27, 1947. The car was originally painted green with black wings (fenders) and a red interior. The car is beiing offered as lot 177 and it has estimated value of $125,000 to $145,000 (no reserve). Auction Preview - K3-3189

On March 8, RM will auction off K3-3189 at their Amelia Auction sale. 3189 was shipped on March 18, 1953 to Allards delership in NYC. The car was originally painted silver with a green interior. The chassis was set up for a Chrysler engine, 3.78 diff, and disk wheels. The car is beiing offered as lot 144 and it has estimated value of $160,000 to $200,000. Sorry for the late start on this, but both RM and Goodings will feature one Allard each at their auctions. As usual, please click on the links or photos below to visit the auction page for each car.

RM: Allard K2, chassis #2029
Our records indicate the car was originally intended to go to Holland, however at some point this was changed and it ended up going to R/P Motors in NYC on June 7, 1951. The original colors were intended to be blue with red interior, however this too was changed during the order process to bronze. This car was also ordered with the DeDion rear suspension (FACT: if you wanted a K2 with wire wheels, you could only get them if you ordered the DeDion option!). This car also features fender mounted spare wheels. Of the 117 K2's built, only a handfull came equipped with the DeDion/wire wheels setup and the fender mounted spares. The  car features a 331 Cadillac with a 3-speed transmission. This car is Lot #149 at RM and will be sold on Saturday March 10. The estimate is $100,000 - $125,000.

Goodings: Allard K3, chassis #3189
Our records indicate this K3 was ordered on October 24, 1952, through the Allard Motor Company of New York City. It was ordered Chrysler modifications and painted silver with green leather upholstery and a fawn-colored top. The car was delivered to Leonard D. Henry of New York City on March 18, 1953. The car features a 331 Hemi with dual carbs and a 4-speed transmission. This car is lot #8 and will be sold on Friday March 9. The estimate is $150,000 - $180,000.

Also of note, RM: 1958 AC Aceca Coupe
One of our members will be selling his AC Aceca coupe to possibly fund the aquisition of another Allard. Please help him fund his addition by considering the purchase of this unique AC. This car is lot #148 at RM and the estimate is $95,000 to $115,000.

Allards @ Amelia - Friday

Greetings from sunny Amelia Island! I'm sitting in the courtyard at the Ritz-Carlton watching the waves crash on the beach. So far the weekend has been wonderful. Friday morning started off with the Concours Tour, which was open to the three featured marques - Duesenberg, Kurtis, and Allard. Around 25 cars made the trip...of those 14 were Allards. The driivers reported that the drive was gorgeous, but chilly. The tour wrapped up in downtown Ferdinandia, where the public was invited to check out the cars for a few hours. After that, we proceeded to the Gooding & Co auction for their preview party and to check out the K1/2, which sold for $150,000. We then drove back to the Ritz to preview the RM Auction and their K2. The day wrapped up with a nice dinner at a local Peruvian restaurant recommended by the Rosenblad's.

Gooding Amelia Island Auction Preview - Allard K1/2-1703

On Friday March 11, Gooding & Co will auction this unique Allard K1/2, Chassis #1703. You're probably wondering why we're calling this a K1/2...visually it's a K1, but mechanically it's actually a K2. The car was originally ordered as a K2, but the US dealer, Forbes required an early delivery. To meet the short lead time, the K2 chassis was fitted with a leftover K1 body. RM Amelia Island Auction Preview - Allard K2-1808

On Saturday March 12, RM will auction off Allard K2-1808 as lot #188. This K2 is equipped with a Olds "Rocket" V8 featuring an Edmunds intake manifold and Mercury transmission. Amelia Island Update - Party!

Amelia Island residents and Allard owners Axel & Hanko Rosenblad have graciously offered to host a party for all Allard owners on Saturday night before the main Concours! The cocktail party will have beer, wine, soda/tea/non-alcoholic beverages, a variety of mixed drinks (but not a full bar) and 'heavy hors d'oeuvres.’ We doubt that anyone will leave hungry! The party will start at 6:30pm.
